Silver Charm 1997 Kentucky Derby Silks
The original winning silks worn by Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens aboard Silver Charm in the 1997 Kentucky Derby from the private collection of owners Bob and Beverly Lewis collection. Auction to benefit the Racetrack Chaplaincy and Old Friends Retirement.
These original Kentucky Derby winning silks with matching cap are a remarkable piece of racing history. The hand-crafted nylon silks originate from the private collection of Silver Charm’s owners Bob and Beverly Lewis, and their green and yellow colors pay tribute to the distinguished owners’ alma mater, the University of Oregon. The silks bear the Fast Colors label of their Monrovia, California manufacturer Unique Sportswear and are in excellent condition, displaying typical wear commensurate with their race-worn use. Adding to the silks’ impeccable provenance, they are hand-signed along the lower hemline by famed Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert along with the personalization “Silver Charm.”
In the123rd Run for the Roses, the silks were worn by Silver Charm’s Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who piloted the gray colt to a thrilling head victory, defeating a talented field of 13 runners that included race favorite Captain Bodgit, longtime arch-rival Free House, and future prominent stallion Pulpit. Silver Charm went on to win the Preakness, then finished second by 3/4 of a length in the Belmont Stakes, narrowly missing a sweep of the 1997 Triple Crown. In a racing career spanning 24 starts, Silver Charm won over $6.9 million and was named Champion 3-Year- Old Colt. Now 32 and residing at Old Friends Farm in Lexington, Silver Charm holds the distinction of being the oldest living Kentucky Derby winner. Auction to benefit the Racetrack Chaplaincy and Old Friends Retirement.
