Giacomo 2005 Kentucky Derby Winning Presentation Saddlecloth
This is the official Kentucky Derby winning saddlecloth presented to trainer John Shirreffs following Giacomo’s victory in the 131st Run for the Roses. Bred and owned by Anne and Jerry Moss, and ridden by jockey Mike Smith, Giacomo’s late surge saw him finish first over a full field of 20 starters that included champion Afleet Alex, Bellamy Road, Flower Alley, Noble Causeway and other accomplished runners. Giacomo’s closing odds of 50-1 is tied for 4th as the all-time largest longshot to win the Kentucky Derby.
The race-worn Derby saddlecloth remains in the collection of the Mosses, (the late Jerry Moss, a pioneer in the music industry, represents the “M” in the well known A & M record label company as its co-founder along with Herb Alpert), and this exact duplicate created by Churchill Downs was presented to Shirreffs as the winning trainer. The official saddlecloth displays Giacomo’s embroidered name and race entry number 10 sewn on a purple canvas cotton cloth that also contains the finely detailed stitching for the 2005 Kentucky Derby logo and the embroidered patchwork of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association as well as an American Flag.
